The depths of religion cannot be fathomed, for there is a sense in which external observable ‘reality’ can be an unreliable guide in reading the compass of religion. Indeed, religions may defy being considered as movements in the secular sense, with a secular agenda focusing on protests and the overthrow of given social orders. This book shows how the significance of religious leadership is largely determined by several factors, which include the type of religious organisations these leaders are piloting, the character and calling of the leaders, the doctrines and the political and legal environments existing in the societies in which they operate.
