The African entrepreneur’s companion is conceived as a foundational material for African scholars, organizations and business-oriented individuals across various locations in the continent. It is expected to meet the needs of individuals who seek adequate knowledge and information in crucial areas of entrepreneurship and its development and practice across Africa. Concepts were carefully selected to cover a wide range of issues in these areas of the discipline.

This book was motivated partly by the challenges faced by Africans in managing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and acquiring skills despite the enormous natural resources the continent is blessed with. The green shoots of entrepreneurship give an economy its vitality — offering fresh perspectives into the ever-evolving field of entrepreneurship (the emergence of new products and services, fresh applications for existing products and services, and new ways of doing business), stirring up the existing economic order, and refining the old ways of commerce. Entrepreneurship development today is a major factor in economic growth and development. It is also the permanent cure for extreme hunger and poverty, occasioned by unemployment.
