Reflections on the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria is an account of independent, passionate, objective and non-partisan observations on the elections that were held in an atmosphere of uncertainties regarding the sustenance of democracy. The past eight years of the APC administration under President Muhammadu Buhari was described as not so well performance in view of the high expectations of Nigeria on Buhari and the generous goodwill given to him in 2015 to lead Nigeria to the promised land.
However, the hope of the main opposition party, the PDP of retaking over power from the APC based on the above assessment was dashed, obviously due to the fractionalization of the party on account of rotation policy, but mainly engineered by personal interests and ambitions. The lessons learned with regard to the management of the power rotation policy between the North and the South, though not a constitutional arrangement, will remain indelible for the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria. Matters arising from the presidential election especially, including the strengths and weaknesses of the dramatis personae, why each one of them won or lost and the litigations thereafter, are all important lessons which is the message of this book.

Abdullahi Shehu Yibaikwal holds a doctorate degree in and is a Professor of Criminology with vast experiences in public service, spanning over three decades across the security, intelligence, law enforcement, diplomatic services and the academia. He was Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation with Concurrent Accreditation to the Republic of Belarus. Hitherto, he served as the Pioneer Director General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA); a specialized institution of the ECOWAS and a FATF Style Regional Body. Before assuming that position, he was Director of Training and Research in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria. Professor Shehu also had a stint with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria, as Programme Expert (Anti-Corruption/Money Laundering); and in the UNODC Country Office in Nigeria, as a Senior Policy Adviser (Anti-Corruption). He was also Special Adviser to the Governor of Plateau State on Inter-Governmental Relations. He is a prolific writer with eight books and over 50 myographs and scientific publications to his credit. Through the Yibaikwal Foundation, Professor Shehu has contributed to the development of education by awarding of scholarships to hundreds of indigent students and in humanitarian assistance to victims of conflict across Nigeria.
