National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) is a government program that requires you to work at a 9-5, attend Community Development Service (CDS) once weekly and participate in a monthly clearance program to collect your “allowance”.

These routine requirements are not excuses to waste time, put your life on hold or forget about your dreams. In life, we keep repeating classes when we fail to stand on the shoulders of those who have gone ahead of us.

My book gives you the opportunity to stand on my shoulders and see ahead, learn from my experiences and avoid repeating my mistakes.

In 2021, I was mobilized to serve as a corp member under the NYSC. I made a decision to “Hone Service Year” regardless of where I was posted. If I was posted to a village, I would maximize the opportunities that existed and leave with no regrets. If I were posted to a city, I would do the exact same thing.

After the completion of the service year in 2022, I was happy with myself. I made the most of the opportunity, and a strange land suddenly became “home far away from home”. You too can do the same.

Honing your Service year, “The Guide” contains two books.
“The Guide” is a manual with tips and practical instructions to help corp members hone their service year and radically transform their lives within one year.

Part 2, “The story”, takes you on a journey and allows you to glean wisdom from some of the experiences that shaped my life during the gap year.

About the Author

Tolulope T. Gbenro is an award-winning social impact consultant with almost a decade of experience. She is the founder of the Hone NYSC movement. An initiative that has empowered 2000+ young people to live purposefully during the gap year.
She is a Youth Advisory Board Member for the AU-EU Youth Action Lab, UNICEF YPAT member, a 2024 finalist of the Future Africa Award and an ELOY 2024 Nominee.

Tolulope’s work spans climate action, renewable energy, women’s empowerment and youth governance. She is also a recipient of the 2022/2023 Nigerian Youth Futures Fund Leadership Grant and a 2023 International Climate Policy Competition Winner.

She is an alumna of Enactus, MCN, Hult Prize, and Leap Africa, among other organisations. Tolulope holds a B.Sc in Industrial Physics-Applied Geophysics from Covenant University and has undergone specialised training in Climate Negotiation from IDEP. She is also a published author and has been featured on numerous media platforms.
