He started his career as a Management Trainee with Lever Brothers Nigeria PLC (Now Unilever Nigeria PLC) in 1981 and rose to the position of Industrial Products Manager, in the Marketing Division before he resigned in 1987.
He joined Nalin Industries Ltd, Port Harcourt in 1987 as Marketing Manager and left for Standard Packaging Nigeria Limited in 1988 as Marketing Manager, rising to the position of General Manager before taking up an appointment in 1992 as Managing Director/CEO of CSS Bookshops Limited, the oldest surviving publishing, printing and book distribution/retailing organisation in Nigeria.
He resigned from CSS Limited in August 2001 and established, along with people of the same vision, The Book Company Limited, where he is currently the Managing Director/CEO.
Mr Alabi is a graduate of Business Administration; Fellow, Institute of Publishing (Nigerian Publishers Association); Fellow, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, and Member, Institute of Directors.
Mr Alabi was: President, Nigerian Booksellers Association; Vice President, Nigerian Publishers Association; Member, Council of Management of the African Books Collective Limited, Oxford, United Kingdom; Chairman, the Afro-Asia Book Council; Pioneer Chairman, of the Nigerian Book Fair Trust, the umbrella body for the seven major book associations in Nigeria and the organisers of the annual Nigeria International Book Fair (NIBF).
