Emerging Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Threats and Nigeria’s National Security: A Practitioner Perspective

The 21st Century is witnessing tremendous growth in the ICT and ICT-related sectors. Texts, pictures, and sounds have all become digitized. The migration from traditional communication to digitized forms has been fast-tracked by rapid globalization. The expanding technology comes with commendable social benefits just as it also creates avenues for internet-driven fraudulent activities. This is complicated by the increasing affordability of computer systems and increasing internet connectivity. The influx of digital and online services has thus increased the threat potential in business, government, and personal life. Most 21st-century transactions are done virtually, reinforcing the notion of a borderless world. The threats in cyberspace are by extension threats to sensitive national information assets. Cybersecurity breaches are beginning to have more impact on Nigeria’s national assets, including her institutions.
