Camp Jones

Jones is a 19-year-old rapper in Alexandra, Johannesburg who has just been given an opportunity to perform in a Springboks event, alongside his friends. His excitement for this opportunity is cut short when one of the various xenophobic uprisings in South Africa affects his family drastically. Subsequent to the attacks, He is repatriated to Lagos, Nigeria by his wealthy father.

The book: CAMP JONES, follows Jones’ narrative of his life as a newbie in the fast-paced city of Lagos; Africa’s most popular black city. The young Rapper’s repatriation coincides with the End-SARS protest going on in Nigeria. He remains without a strong opinion towards the happenings in his country.

In the turn of events, Jones meets with a 20-year-old upcoming rapper and internet sensation; ‘Big Shade’. They become friends and Jones learns from their interaction, that events like the End-SARS protests could serve as an avenue for upcoming artists like himself, to make a mark and create recognition for themselves, which would propel their musical careers forward. With this intention being his sole motivation, a resurgent Jones escapes his self-imposed confinement and joins the now-famous End-SARS protest. He picks an interest and gets involved in the series of rap battles going on as part of the entertainment during the protest. A lot happens in between the days that follow; revelations, realisations and the young rapper for the first time, experiences exactly what the protest is all about. Camp Jones has a change of heart and dives deep into the world of protests, activism and the fight against police brutality in Nigeria.
